Magnetic stabilizer is used to help hold the downrod steady when moving and scanning.  It is a long distance from top of fence to transducer and there is some oscillation if the boat is moving at about 3 mph.  This magnetic system gives another point of contact to help hold the downrod steady.  If you primarily fish without moving the pontoon, it is not really necessary.

Also there is an optional extra cone for the downrod.  Placed low on the downrod it can be used to suspend the transducer above the water without bringing the downrod over the fence every time.  Can be used for quick moves but is not intened for full speed running down the lake.
